- 2000s: Maroubra was named as one of the suburbs involved in the Cronulla Riots. In 2006, Maroubra Beach became the second in Australia to be named a National Surfing Reserve.
Maroubra Junction is the main shopping area of the suburb, along with Pacific Square Shopping Centre, which has a distinctive outdoor eating area, Coles and Aldi supermarkets, Glamabags, and many other specialty stores.
